  • Digital Business Transformation in the Global Enterprise (GSI7417)

This is an overview course to prepare the general manager to be more effective in dealing (both strategically and organizationally) with the digital transformation of the global enterprise and its ecosystem of partnerships. It is about the organizational transformation that takes place when any enterprise wants to take a core part of its business online and to go digital. Mastering the concepts, practices, and technologies of digital transformation (and e-business as it was originally named by IBM in 2000) is a critical skill for line managers in any area of business. Furthermore, the global dimension is becoming more critical as digital technologies and broadband networks change the speed and global reach by which enterprises can provide their services, partner with others, source their products, and enter remote markets. This course is designed to prepare general managers to operate successfully in such a global digital world, and to create stakeholder value and competitive advantage. This is a “future-proof” survey course that helps you understand enough pieces of the mosaic that forms digital transformation so that you can manage intelligently as new pieces of the mosaic appear and it changes in the years to come. There is not sufficient time to delve deeply into any of the topics. It is geared to the general manager, and the managerial mindset of this course is one that focuses on the relationship between technology and the business, rather than a focus on the technology itself. • Smart Business Strategy (GSI6159)

Successful New Economy firms must be able to accomplish each of the following tasks: Create value largely through the gathering, synthesizing, and distribution of information / Formulate strategy in ways that make management of the enterprise and management of technology convergent / Operate in a world characterized by low barriers to entry, near zero variable costs of operation, and, as a result, intense, constantly shifting competition / Organize resources around the demand side rather than around the supply side / Manage relationships with customers and markets often through screen-to-face channels and interfaces / Use technology mediated channels. This course aims to equip present and future executives, managers, and strategists in becoming successful in this sweeping change.

  • Digital Business Research (GSI6169)

Virtual world development is still in its infancy, and we are just beginning to explore and understand how activities in a virtual world enhance or replace real world economic and social activities. There is a pressing need to develop an understanding of emerging virtual world dynamics and potential competitive, organizational, and legal issues (MISQ Special Issue on New Ventures inVirtual Worlds, Sept 2008, p. 1) The research topics addressed in this seminar might relate to some of the issues below - What are the new business models and strategies that are likely to thrive in virtual worlds - Do virtual worlds represent a disruptive innovation for organizations, or just an additional channel to support electronic commerce - What products and services translate effectively to virtual worlds - What are the implications for image, branding, and advertising, especially in the areas of product and concept development and testing in virtual worlds - What are the dynamics underlying consumer behavior and consumer acceptance in virtual worlds - How do organizational boundaries blur through customer integration and collaboration in virtual worlds - What are the potential areas of cross-selling in real and virtual worlds - How can organizations leverage virtual world dynamics to support intra-organizational virtual teams - To what degree are virtual worlds influencing the workplace and how and where work gets done - How/why do communities develop in virtual worlds and what are their dynamics - How are educational institutions leveraging virtual worlds - Where do we see convergence between real and virtual worlds
